MANILA, Philippines – A reader wrote: “I lost my father on March 18 due to ruptured intestine; he had severe infection and died. His death came as a surprise to us because he’d been physically strong and never complained of anything.
“It has been very hard for me to accept that I’ll never see him again, nor talk to him again. The last time I saw him was over two years ago, and three weeks before he died, he told me how excited he was to see my husband and daughter, who he never had the chance to meet. We were supposed to have a vacation in the Philippines three weeks before he passed away.
“Please help me deal with the emptiness I and my whole family are going through right now.

Based on my years of research on mysticism, spirituality and the development of human inner faculties, life and death are mere cycles. Each of us is given only a limited time on earth for each lifetime. Death on the physical plane means birth on the spiritual plane.
A wise spiritual entity recently told us that destruction is necessary for life to continue. The entity gave the example of man having to kill plants and animals in order to live. It is all part of an inevitable cycle of nature.
It is too bad that we, in this country, are not taught to accept death as part of life, unlike in other cultures. I understand that in Tibet, children at an early age are taught about preparing for death. They do not mourn death— they celebrate it, because they know that only by dying will they be given a chance to live again another life to correct the mistakes they had made in the present life. Their strong belief in reincarnation gives Tibetans and other Buddhists the courage to face death calmly. Buddhists do not believe in what Christians call “hell” which is a place of eternal punishment.
You should not feel sad about your father’s sudden passing. His spirit chose it to be, for reasons only he knows. One month before a person dies, his soul already knows he will die. But his conscious, rational mind may not. Therefore, every death, even accidental ones, is already known to each soul.
Normal reaction
To feel sad about the death of a loved one is a normal reaction. It is alright to shed tears. But to feel sad or to mourn the death of someone close to you over a long period is not healthy, both for you and the departed soul.
If a close relative or friend mourns a person’s death too much, if he or she keeps calling the soul back and wishing him or her to be alive again, the departed soul will have difficulty ascending to the higher plane in the spirit world.
This is one reason I am against calling on the spirits of the dead or against holding séances—unless the spirit itself manifests that he or she wants to communicate with the living. In the case of the latter, the spirit of the dead cannot and will not rest until the message of the dead person has been conveyed to the living. They become what we call “earthbound” or disturbed spirits.
If your father is not giving any manifestation that he is still around and wants to communicate with the living, his soul is already at peace. Don’t disturb him anymore.
We do not realize that the dead are in a more peaceful and happier state than we who are still living on earth.
Besides, there is ample medical and scientific evidence that people who suffer the loss of a loved one for long soon get sick themselves and die. I know the case of a Chinese-Filipino woman with cancer. When she met and fell in love with a Filipino man, her cancer disappeared. For three years, she was cancer-free. Then he suddenly died of a heart attack and shortly after his death, her cancer recurred.
So just pray for the eternal peace of your departed father rather than being extremely sad. You will get over this soon enough.
