Lyrics:

“The Impossible Dream”

from MAN OF LA MANCHA (1972)

music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion

Man of La Mancha

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go

To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star

This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far

To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
For a heavenly cause

And I know if I’ll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I’m laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star

[There’s scarcely any being on the planet who doesn’t know this song.  They may not know, however, that long before our hero Ninoy Aquino became associated with this song, it was already FG’s favorite song.  It was around 1968-1969 when FG bought an LP of Man of La Mancha, while we were at Devon, Pennsylvania, so we could listen to it whenever we felt like.  Long before that, FG had been humming this song.  There’s even a refrain in this song, which is not, however, included in this version, which I kidded him about as being so apt for him: “To be willing to give, When there’s no more to give”.  (The lines following, “To be willing to die, So that honor and justice may live” may have influenced our hero to offer his life for our country.)
