It has often been said that you are either a great artist or a great scientist, but never both. I guess it was one of the things that I most admired about Dad — I had often thought of him as having been an exception to that rule, for he ’saw colors’ and ‘heard sounds’ even in the scientific world of Psychology.
And I would like to believe that I say this not simply because he was my father.

Once upon a time, a University Professor endowment was given to one who was knowledgeable in literature, the social sciences and the sciences, and Den of course aspired to that distinct honor. He was undoubtedly qualified, having majored in English in his undergraduate, taken Psychology in his master’s and Ph.D., and taught Biology as well.
In fact, one time, Jimmy Abad, who was then UP vice-president, sent him an application for University Professor, which we filled up and filed. I don’t know what happened to that application, but Den never made it to University Professor. I wanted to inquire, but Den told me not to. So I let it be.
Den was also invited by Dr. Lagmay to join the NAST, but since somebody whom Den didn’t admire was also in the NAST then, Den refused. Since NAST is the body which determines who is chosen National Scientist, Den possibly might have forfeited his chance to be so chosen. But Den never regretted his decision. He’s that high-minded.

Dad never aspired for honor. Thus his reluctance, specially in later years, to join searches for outstanding —, and even contests. Because honor should not be aspired for, but bestowed freely. And it is Dad’s honor that this page is being lovingly tendered. Much credit to Faye, and Mai of course.
